Lot 3047
Moses, patrikios, late 11th century. Seal (Lead, 19 mm, 7.42 g, 12 h). O / ΠP/Φ – M/OC/H ('The prophet Moses') Moses, nimbate, in three-quarter profile to left, blessing with right hand in the fold of his garment and holding a scroll in his left hand. Rev. OMⲰN/VMON C•/ON M૪C/H ΠPK• ('Namesake, save your Moses, patrikios') in four lines, decorations below. Wassiliou-Seibt, Corpus 1628 corr. (Prokopios). Very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

As noted by Gert Boersema in his description of a parallel example to our seal (Vcoins, no. 22506), the previous edition by Wassiliou-Seibt ('Prokopios') should be revised, as several parallel examples have since emerged that were unknown to her at the time of writing. These new seals allow for the attribution to a patrikios named Moses. The obverse depicts 'the prophet Moses' as a young man, and the reverse legend is a verse invoking the Old Testament figure to save his namesake. The abbreviations for s(os)on and p(at)r(i)k(ion) are indicated by dots.
